About the role

We now have a Senior Underwriter opportunity within our New Lending team. The role holds a mandate of £750,000 and underwrites cases in excess of this for dual sign off with Senior Managers and Execs.  It’s responsible for making appropriate lending decisions on mainly secured residential and buy to let mortgage applications, exercising discretion over Lending Policy where appropriate. This role is a key part of a team that will be at the forefront of any new specialist areas of Lending.

Providing Senior underwriting expertise on complex and high value cases making final decisions whilst being accountable for protecting the quality of the Society’s lending book are critical parts of the role. Being a role model for expert underwriting and provide coaching, training and development to enhance colleague underwriting and customer service capabilities are also parts of this opportunity.

Persuading and influencing up to Executives level providing robust justification of lending decisions made, building confidence in the quality of underwriting conducted through the department will be important part of the role, as well as being point of escalation for queries or challenges from internal and external customers on lending decisions

About you

We’re looking for someone with a genuine passion for delivering excellent service as well as having a proven decision making track record. You’ll already be demonstrating high levels of credibility with your underwriting expertise and will currently hold a similar mandate level.

You’ll already have experience in residential and BTL mortgage underwriting, specialising in self-employed and special purpose vehicle underwriting would be advantageous,

Having current knowledge of mortgages markets, products, regulatory requirements and the changing climate of demands surrounding Credit Risk and Financial Crime will also be required.

Being a positive proactive team player with the ability to communicate effectively up to Senior Manager /  Executive level will be key skills. You’ll also be able to demonstrate where you challenge appropriately when policies, processes and procedures are not in line with putting the customer first or reducing Society risk.
